Turkana Education Board recently convened a crucial meeting with principals and representatives from various colleges to enhance the bursary disbursement process for students in Turkana County.
The session followed recent institutional visits by the Board, aimed at interrogating findings, identifying systemic gaps and formulating effective strategies for transparent and equitable allocation of bursary funds.
The meeting emphasized the importance of credibility and record integrity in managing bursary allocations. Turkana County Executive Committee Member for Education Leah Audan reminded stakeholders that bursary funds are limited and must be managed transparently.
She stressed that accurate and up-to-date records are essential to ensure that only the most deserving students benefit.
Chief Officer for ECDE and Social Protection, Paul Lodunga, also called for proper documentation from institutions. He encouraged schools and colleges to channel their concerns directly to the Board. He added that the Board will prioritize students with verified admissions and urged institutions to provide acknowledgment letters and reports to support accountability in the bursary process.

Turkana Education Board Chairperson Rev. Joseph Elibach appreciated institutions for their commitment to supporting students. He urged them to intensify their efforts by ensuring that all eligible students are accurately documented in bursary lists, which will aid in fair and efficient distribution.
During a plenary session, institutional representatives shared challenges facing the bursary distribution process. They cited issues such as poor coordination and inadequate communication, calling for strengthened partnerships with the Board to streamline the process and eliminate bottlenecks.
Turkana Bursary Fund Administrator CPA Livingstone Eyanae reminded principals of the importance of maintaining strong financial reporting standards. He noted that these reports will be used as a key reference point for future disbursement decisions, underscoring the need for transparency and accuracy.

The meeting also featured a presentation by TUCUSA Secretary General Brighton Edung, who outlined critical issues affecting Turkana students that require urgent interventions at the county level.
The Board pledged to address emerging challenges by fostering closer collaboration with educational institutions and ensuring that bursary disbursements are conducted in a manner that is fair, transparent, and accountable.
