TUK to resume learning after return-to-work agreement ends strike

Principal Secretary for Higher Education, Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, alongside university leadership and representatives from UASU and KUSU, signed the agreement document to resolve the strike.

CS Education Julius Migos Ogamba announced that the return-to-work agreement for staff at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) had been signed this afternoon.

The agreement, signed by the Principal Secretary for Higher Education, Dr Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, along with the university leadership and representatives from University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), brings an end to the industrial dispute that had disrupted activities at the institution since January 23, 2025.

CS Ogamba confirmed that with this agreement in place, normal operations at the university can now resume.

“With this agreement in place, normal operations at the university can now resume. The management, in collaboration with all stakeholders, is committed to recovering lost time and ensuring that students get back on track with their academic calendar,” Ogamba said.

He assured that the management, in collaboration with all stakeholders, is committed to recovering lost time and ensuring students get back on track with their academic calendar.

TUK was ordered to close indefinitely on February 3, 2025, following a strike by lecturers demanding improved working conditions and overdue salaries dating back to December 2024.

As a result, students were instructed to vacate the premises by 2:45 pm the same day.

The strike and closure exposed deeper issues such as delayed salaries, non-remittance of third-party and statutory deductions, and the absence of comprehensive medical cover for TUK employees.

Students protested the closure, with some staging demonstrations at the Ministry of Education.
