Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) Makueni County Executive Secretary Justus Kimeu has called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to release payment of Junior Secondary School Teachers (JSS) who since February have not been paid their dues.
Speaking in his Wote office, Kimeu observed that the teachers have been struggling to make ends meet considering the tough economic times that the country is experiencing.
“Though we thank the government for employing additional teachers, it is also good to know that they are living a hard life. Schools have no money to pay them and they do not have the ability to even provide them with lunch,” said Kimeu.
He urged the employer to pay them immediately and if they are not able to, Kimeu said they (TSC) should talk to the banks to give JSS teachers interest free salary advanceS.
He noted that the advance will enable them put up with challenges they are experiencing.
He noted that it was unfair to subject them to such a situation, knowing very well that the schools cannot support them.
The unionists also noted that the teachers are not enough and called upon TSC to employ more for easy management of workload bearing in mind secondary school teachers are only trained on two subjects.
