TSC urges schools to plant trees to mark world environment day

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has urged the school heads across the country to plant trees as the world commemorate the World Environment Day today, June 5, 2024.

TSC in a memo signed by the Director Administrative Services Ibrahim Mumin addressing all the Regional and County Directors of Education seen by Education News directed them to marshal the teachers and staff in their area of jurisdiction to plant trees to celebrate World Environment Day 2024.

“This initiative will go towards fulfilling the target on the presidential directive on tree growing and restoration campaign. Remind the teachers and staff to upload the numbers on the jaza Miti App,” the memo reads in part.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1973, World Environment Day is the largest international event focused on the environment, coordinated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

Governments, businesses, civil society, and educational institutions participate annually to raise awareness and take action on environmental issues, aiming to protect the planet’s future.

This year’s event theme is “Our Land, Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration” which aims to emphasizes the importance of restoring land, combating desertification, and enhancing resilience to drought.

This is the second time in a row since schools reopened for term two that they will be planting trees in schools. On May 17, 2024 the exercise was done as directed by the Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang in bid to raise awareness about conservation of forests in the country.
