TSC under pressure to raise and fast-track teachers’ retooling allowances

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has come under pressure from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) officials to increase and promptly pay allowances for tutors who attended the recently concluded junior school retooling trainings across the country.

KUPPET leaders, speaking during the training sessions in Western, Rift Valley, Nyanza and Eastern regions, said the current daily transport allowance of Sh500 was inadequate and delays in reimbursement were discouraging teachers from fully participating in the exercise.

In Eastern region, union official Jane Ndegwa said some teachers spent more than Sh750 a day to access the venues, yet past reimbursements had taken up to three months to be processed. She urged TSC to “step into the teachers’ shoes” and review the rates upwards.

In Nandi County, KUPPET branch executive secretary Paul Rotich praised the high turnout but challenged TSC to re-evaluate its transport reimbursement model, noting that “Sh500 cannot cover transport from Sigot to Kapsabet and back.” He also called on principals to support teachers during such crucial trainings.

In Kisumu, teachers hailed the training as a game-changer for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), saying it focuses on learners’ abilities compared to the content-heavy 8-4-4 system. “I am eagerly waiting for January to interact with Grade Ten learners,” said Godias Ombogi.

TSC targeted more than 50,000 teachers in the first phase of the senior school retooling programme this August. The second and third phases are scheduled for December and April next year.
