TSC under pressure to promote teachers with higher grades

Pressure continues to mount on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to promote teachers who have attained higher qualifications but have never received any promotion since 2013 having invested a lot in education for the benefit of learners.
Speaking during the Keiyo Branch Annual General Meeting held in Tambach TTC, National Knut Deputy Executive Secretary Mr. James Ndiku said that the commission should unconditionally promote teachers as witnessed in other sectors where civil servants are paid hefty perks leaving teachers alone languishing in abject poverty.
He said that teachers should also be recognized for nation-building.
He said the affected teachers invested heavily to acquire higher grades and should be remunerated to motivate them.
Saying that recognition is not just enough, he added that the commission should go an extra mile to pay them accordingly with immediate effect.
“The national office has already registered a trade dispute with the Ministry of Labour. We are calling upon the membership to be ready if you are called to take an industrial action and we are going to do whatever it takes to ensure that the teachers who have received enhanced education get promoted,” said Ndiku.
Ndiku regretted that most teachers took loans to further their education with majority of them now having undergraduate and master’s degrees but to date the employer is yet to promote them.
“The teachers presented their certificates to TSC and all they were given were acknowledgment letters. Teachers don’t need the letters, they need money in their pay slips to repay the loans,” the deputy executive said.
