The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to recruit 20,000 intern teachers in the 2023/2024 Financial Year in a bid to ensure objectives outlined in the government’s transformation agenda are achieved, TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia has said.

Speaking during a submission to the National Assembly’s Committee on Education and Research on Monday, Dr. Macharia said that the move was aimed at reducing teacher shortage in public schools.

“These teachers are expected to reduce the shortage in our public schools but more importantly, ensure that learners receive quality education. One, it will create employment for the many young people who are currently unemployed. Secondly, it will improve the living standards of many households across the country,” she said.

The Committee had invited Dr. Macharia for consideration of the 2023/2024 financial year estimates of revenue and expenditure.

The TSC boss said the Commission requires Ksh 2.2 billion to carry out promotion of teachers in different job groups and another Ksh 2.1 billion for funding teacher professional development.

Professional development involves the career-long processes and related systems and polices designed to enable educators (teachers, administrators, and supervisors) to acquire, broaden and deepen their knowledge, skills and competencies in order to serve the education sector effectively.
