Teachers Service Commission will promote and deploy 1,000 primary school teachers to secondary schools across the country.
According to an advert in a local daily on 1st September 2020, those earmarked for promotion must have a mean grade of C+ and above in their KCSE or its equivalent and have acquired a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
Besides being a Kenyan citizen, one must hold a P1 certificate and must have attained a C+ and above in the two teaching subjects.
Successful candidates under this category shall be appointed at T Scale 7, grade C2 under the Career Progression Guidelines and shall be deployed to secondary schools where vacancies exist.
Early this year, the Commission stated that a number of PI teachers who have acquired a bachelor’s degree in education were promoted and deployed to secondary schools.
The move is meant to attract, motivate, and facilitate retention of competent workforce in the country. The teachers had until January 6th 2020 to report to their new stations.
This is good news for a number of teachers who, despite not meeting the university admission grade, which had moved to a B based on past performances, joined primary teacher education programmes.
The teachers also spent their resources to pursue higher education in the hope of getting a promotion.
In the past promotion, one of the letters dated 30th December 2019 indicated that the teacher was appointed as Secondary School Teacher II at T-Scale 7, earning a minimum of Sh34,955 and a maximum of Sh43,694 per month.
Besides, they are set to earn enhanced house, commuter, hardship, and leave allowances as per the new grades.
While meeting the Parliamentary Committee on Education in 2019, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia indicated in a report that 18,076 employed as P1 teachers had acquired degrees by end of October 2018.
She also disclosed that P1 teachers who hold diplomas, higher diplomas, undergraduate degrees, post graduate diplomas, masters and PhDs to serve at junior secondary levels as enshrined in the Competency Based Curriculum.
According to the TSC Career Progression Guidelines for Teachers 2017, a teacher will qualify for appointment to secondary teacher II T-Scale 7 if he/she is in possession of the above qualifications.
Besides, one is expected to have attained a minimum grade of C+ in the two teaching subjects at KCSE level among other requirements.
