TSC to meet teachers’ unions today to avert imminent strike

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to engage in critical discussions with teachers’ unions today, August 21, in last-minute efforts to prevent a looming strike that threatens to disrupt the reopening of schools for the third term.

The meeting, scheduled for 10:00am, is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to resolve the Ksh13.3 billion pay dispute that has sparked unrest among educators, with a nationwide strike set for August 26.

The dispute, if unresolved, could paralyze learning in public schools causing significant disruptions ahead of school reopening.

After today’s discussions, teachers’ unions are expected to participate in a joint roundtable with the Ministries of Labour, Treasury and Education.

The core issue revolves around the failure by TSC to implement the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which led to frustration and the threat of industrial action.

The second phase of the CBA, which was signed in 2021, with an addendum in 2023, was scheduled to take place on July 1, 2024.
