TSC, teacher unions seal Ksh33 billion pay rise

The Teachers Service Commission, (TSC) has announced the recruitment and promotion of more teachers in the new 2025/2025 financial year after sealing Ksh33 billon Collective Bargaining Agreement, (CBA) agreement.

In a statement released on July 18, on the results of CBA that will run from 2025-2029 with teachers unions, TSC revealed that it will recruit and promote more teachers to add on the effort made by the President William Ruto for the support of the teaching service.

“Owing to the government’s enormous support for the teaching service, the TSC will, in the 2025-2026 Financial year recruit additional teachers at a cost of Ksh2.4 Billion. Already the Kenya Kwanza government has recruited a total of 76,000 teachers in span of just two and half years,” statement reads.

The commission also said that it will promote teachers across all cadres to address the issue of job group stagnation.

“TSC will promote teachers across all cadres at a cost of Ksh1 Billion,” statement read.

The commission also disclosed a Ksh33 Billion CBA deal signing with the teacher unions, for a net period of four years.

“Further, as a result of the Government’s investment in the teaching service, we have today signed a CBA with teacher unions whose total cost is Ksh33,753,372,108 net for a period of four years,” TSC said.

The Commission added that the first phase of the new CBA will be effective from July 1, 2025 at accost of Ksh 8.4 Billion in salaries and allowances, with more than Ksh1.2 billion being employer’s contribution to the teacher’s Pension Scheme and other statutory deductions.

TSC also revealed it had awarded teachers a salary increment of up to 29.5 per cent to various cadres’ staff, an award it says is geared towards bridging the wage gap between the highest and lowest paid teacher in the public service.

“In order to address the concerns raised by teachers through their unions, and other elaborate negotiations, the commission has awarded a salary increment of up to 29.5% for our various cadres of staff.

The commission also introduced baggage allowance, which enable a teacher to carry their belongings to the new station. However all other allowances to remain unchanged.

The Commission further stated that they have agreed that teachers who exit service through dismissal shall be entitled to pension benefits.

TSC will also conduct a job evaluation exercise for the teaching service within the 2025/26 financial year in order to clear way for the Career Progression Guideline in consultation teacher unions.

It is win for the lactating female teachers, as the commission grant them two hours’ time-off per day for two months to breast feed.

The commission added that with the progressive awards, the majority of the key concerns raised by the unions have been fully addressed, hoping that the teaching fraternity will be motivated to carry on with their duties.

The heated CBA negotiations which begun at 11 am with the KUSNET leaders and ended at 1 am past midnight with KNUT leaders saw the stalemate which has been between teachers and their employer ironed and agreement met.
