TSC suspends teacher promotion interviews owing to El Niño rains

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia. The commission has suspended the promotional interviews for teachers owing to the heavy rains around the country.

The nationwide teacher promotion interviews scheduled to commence next week have been suspended by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) due to the ongoing intense El Niño rains affecting multiple regions in the country.

The Commission’s decision to suspend the exercise is a response to the severe impact of the enhanced rains, with uncertainty about when the interviews will resume.

The resumption will depend on the prevailing weather conditions, and forecasts suggest the rains may persist until January.

Currently, 36 out of the 47 counties in Kenya have been adversely affected by the heavy rains.

The National El Niño Steering Committee reported that floods resulting from the rains have claimed the lives of over 130 people, with Tana River, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties experiencing the most significant impact.

Dr Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Internal Security and National Administration, revealed that Isiolo, Kwale, Homa Bay, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Meru and Kisumu are on high alert due to the prevailing weather conditions.

The destructive impact of the rains includes the blockage of regions now inaccessible due to damaged roads.

The situation remains fluid, contingent on weather assessments, and updates will follow as conditions permit the resumption of the crucial teacher promotion exercise.

Teachers were informed of this development via SMS; yet despite the suspension, many are yet to receive the communication from their respective TSC sub-county offices.
