The Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) intern teachers who have been conducting demos since schools reopened for second term up to last week have been served with termination letters by Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The sacking comes after JSS teachers called off strike on Saturday, June 8 2024.

In the copies of letters of termination seen by Education News today, TSC attributed the move as a result of professional misconduct by the intern teachers.

“Reference is made to the show cause letter in which you were accorded an opportunity to explain the reasons why your engagement as an intern should not be terminated on account of professional misconduct.

“The Commission has carefully considered your response and found the same to be unsatisfactory,” the letter reads in part.

The shocker comes a few weeks after TSC served a sum of 7, 357 intern teachers of the 46,000 show cause letters over their riots which saw a significant number of learners miss out on studies where they lamented of poor pay and terms of employment demanding that they be confirmed on Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms.

The sacking letters were dated June 6, 2024 but were distributed to head teachers on June 10, 2024.

TSC didn’t mention the exact number of teachers who have been served with termination letters.

JSS teachers through their spokesperson Omari Omari called off their demos for a month awaiting the National Assembly to pass the 2024/2025 financial budget which will see most of them being confirmed into PnP terms.

“After the meeting of JSS County leaders, we resolved to suspend our demonstrations to pave way for Parliament to pass 2024/25 budgeting Thursday. By that date we should have received communication on the status of the confirmation of the 46,000 teacher,” Omari said.
