Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled a new grading system structure and designation for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers.

According to the job designations, intern teachers have been designated as Intern Teacher Secondary.

The Diploma holders have been designated as Secondary Teacher III at Grade C1 and those who are holders of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or its equivalent are designated as Secondary Teacher II at Grade C2 which is also a promotional grade for holders of Diploma in Education.

Secondary Teacher 1 have been designated at grade C3 with promotional and entry grade for institutional administrators at JSS being Senior Master IV at Grade C4, then progress to Senior Master III at Grade C5, Senior Master II at Grade D1  and Senior Master I at Grade D2.

The promotional and entry grade for Deputy Principals in JSS is Deputy Principal IV at C5 then progress through Deputy Principal III at Grade D1, Deputy Principal II at Grade D2, and Deputy Principal I at Grade D3.

The entry grade to Principal JSS is D3 which is designated Principal, then progresses through Senior Principal at D4 and Chief Principal at D5.

However, it is not clear whether the Commission will adopt the same grading structure considering that the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms recommended domiciling of JSS into primary schools and being renamed as Junior Schools.

The team also proposed a redefinition of basic education with an expanded primary school to be known as a comprehensive school comprising Pre-Primary (PP1-PP2),

The primary section will be classified into Lower Primary (Grade 1-3) and Upper Primary (Grade 4-6), and Junior School (Grade 7-9).

The comprehensive school shall fall under one overall leadership, known as a principal with Pre-primary, Primary and Junior Schools being headed by Deputy Principals respectively.
