TSC refuses to deduct union dues to KUPPET from teachers

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia. The commission has not deducted union dues to KUPPET from teachers in August payslip.

The country’s teacher employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has omitted union dues from KUPPET members that it normally deducts from their payslips.

This is indicative of the commission’s distaste of the ongoing strike that secondary school teachers have upheld despite calls to end it as their demands have been partly met.

Several KUPPET branch officials spoke to Education News confirming that teachers’ August payslips were out without union dues as is supposed to be the case.

The commission agreed to implement the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in arrears backdating it to July this year, the increment which has reflected in August payslips for teachers.

The strike has continued despite the Employment and Labour Relations Court issuing a temporary suspension order on Tuesday, August 27, following an urgent application from TSC.

KUPPET has persisted with the strike even after the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) called off theirs a day to the material day.

KNUT had agreed to the government’s requests for more time.
