The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has pleaded with teachers to attend interviews scheduled from December 4 to fill the 36,505 promotional vacancies it advertised.
Macharia urged teachers not to shy away from responsibility and to actively contribute to addressing the pressing demand for educators nationwide.
Speaking at the ongoing KEPSHA conference in Mombasa, TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia expressed gratitude for the government’s allocation of Ksh1 billion in the 2023/2024 financial year for teacher promotions.
Macharia disclosed that the commission, having last received funds for teacher promotions in 2011, recently advertised 36,505 vacancies, with 17,914 positions earmarked for primary school teachers across various grades.
Despite these opportunities, however, Macharia highlighted a challenge in attracting applicants, especially in Special Needs Education where a significant shortage persists.
Drawing attention to the recent recruitment exercise, Macharia expressed concern that 1,123 vacancies remained unfilled across the country.
She urged candidates invited for interviews to attend, pointing out that the commission had even lowered the requirements to facilitate broader participation.
In addressing the issue of unfilled vacancies, Macharia underscored the importance of teachers seeking employment outside their home counties.
She emphasized the need for teachers to embrace opportunities and not limit themselves geographically, pointing out the availability of many unemployed teachers in different counties who could have filled these positions.
She encouraged unemployed teachers to apply for positions advertised nationwide, noting that the government allocated funds to recruit 56,000 new teachers in the past year, predominantly for junior secondary schools.
