Stakeholders in the Education sector have come out to praise the Teachers Service Commission’s plan to deploy and retrain experienced P1 teachers to junior school as a well thought idea that has come at the right time.

Speaking to Education News, stakeholders from Mombasa, Embu, Thika ,Eldoret, and Bungoma hailed the initiative terming it as one of the best conflict resolution mechanism.

“Our children at the junior school were being handled by young teachers who require a lot of mentorship and coaching to understand professionalism that teaching should have,” said Abdirazik, a parent from Mpeketoni. He went further to say that most of the young teachers’ dress codes contravened the TSC code of conduct and as models; learners were ready to copy them.

In Embu, most parents viewed the step as a stop gap measure that will mitigate the cat and mouse relationship between the junior school teachers and their administrators.

“Most of the junior school teachers are always at collision with their Head teachers because they feel their level is beyond primary. So by bringing on board more mature and experienced teachers will help in restoring sanity that will bolster learning in junior schools,” commented Waceke.

“Most of the junior school teachers are always at collision with their Head teachers because they feel their level is beyond primary. So by bringing on board more mature and experienced teachers will help in restoring sanity that will bolster learning in junior schools,” commented Waceke.

According to Kirongo, a teacher in Nakuru town, bringing on board P1 teachers will greatly help in the teaching of learning areas that the current cohorts of junior school teachers have little or no grasp at all.

“Learning areas like music, physical education, Home science and Art and craft have remained untouched in many schools. But with the coming of P1 teachers it would be a big relief because most of them trained on these areas in their colleges.” Kirongo said

TSC is in the process of collecting data of the currently serving P1 teachers who obtained grades C+ and C with C+ in the two teaching subjects recognized by the commission. The commission in partnership with World Bank is in the process of equipping these teachers with the necessary skills that will see them get deployed to junior schools so as to bridge the staffing deficits.
