TSC picks new Head of Staffing, appoints new field directors

By Our Reporter

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has made new appointments to replace several directors who had either left the organization or transferred to new stations, Education News can now report.

In the new changes, Ms. Lilian Wachira who has been the Western TSC Regional Director (RD) has been appointed as the new Head of Staffing in an acting capacity. She replaces Rita Wahome who took an early retirement recently. It is understood that Wahome handed over officially to her successor last Friday at the TSC headquarters. Wachira, a soft spoken technocrat, has been a County Director in several regions with Kericho being her last station before she was elevated to RD and posted to Western.

The Head of Staffing is a powerful post at the commission and the holder of this docket wields immense leverage in the recruitment, deployment, transfer and promotion of teachers across the country. The office bearer, to a large extent, comes second to the Chief Executive Officer in terms of who calls the shots at the organization which is the largest single employer in East and Central Africa.

Also affected by the new developments is Joseph Mukele who has been a Deputy Director in Staffing. He has now been deployed to Western as the new RD. He replaces Wachira. Mukele has reportedly been acting as the Head of Staffing pending the appointment of a substantive holder since the departure of Wahome. Mukele is a highly rated officer within the Commission caucuses and is considered a thorough-bred professional in how he goes about his duties.

Similarly, Caroline Nandi who has also been a senior official at the Staffing department has been deployed to the field. She will be the new Deputy Director in Siaya County. She will replace Joe Atwoto who was promoted to full director and sent to Maralal as the new Samburu TSC boss.

The Commission has also appointed Jackson Atuti Ongeto as the new Baringo County Director. He replaces Nzuvu Nzioka who has been recalled to the TSC headquarters for assignment of new responsibilities. Up to the time of his new appointment, Ongeto was the Deputy Director in Kericho County.

The teachers’ employer has also effected a few changes at the headquarters. Those in the mix include Peter Kega who has been a Deputy Director in Staffing. He now moves to Quality Assurance in a similar capacity. He will deputize Dr. Reuben Mugwuku Nthamburi who heads the Quality Assurance and Standards department. Replacing Kega is Jane Irambu who has been stationed at Discipline division as a senior official.

At the time of going to press, TSC was yet to name deputy directors for Kericho, Trans-Nzoia and Nairobi which remain vacant after the office bearers were transferred. Education News will duly keep you posted as things unfold.
