TSC on the spot over alleged discrimination of Muslim teachers

The Kenya Muslim National Advisory Council (KEMNAC) has accused the Teachers Service Commission of discrimination for not employing adequate Muslim teachers who are required to teach Islamic Religious Education (IRE) during recruitment exercises.

Speaking during Eid al Adha celebrations on Wednesday, the Council National Chairman Sheikh Juma Ngao noted that during recruitment drives, TSC might employ 10 Christian Religious Education (CRE) teachers but ends up employing only 5 Muslim teachers for IRE.

However, this call is not new. In 2021 while speaking in an interview at a local media station, Dr. Khamis Mwamburi, a don at Umma University intimated the same observation.

Dispelling the notion that there are inadequate qualified Muslim teachers to teach IRE, the don said that there are more than 200 unemployed Muslim teachers countrywide.

“I am calling on stakeholders to take up the issue with TSC to ensure there is fairness and justice in the recruitment of teachers. This issue should be dealt with urgently so that our children are not forced to learn CRE despite having many unemployed IRE teachers,” he said.

Dr. Mwamburi further lamented that many BoMs of public schools with large numbers of Muslim students are forced to employ IRE teachers while CRE teachers are employed by TSC.

“There is deliberate discrimination of IRE tutors and despite numerous complaints, this matter is yet to be addressed by TSC.” He said.
