TSC, KNUT consultative meeting currently underway in Nairobi

TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia and KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu engage in a conversation during a past meeting.

The meeting between Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is currently underway at the Commission headquarters.

The Commission had invited KNUT for a consultative meeting today March 15, 2024 to deliberate on the proposed changes to the TSC Act, 2012 which will be effected through the TSC (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

KNUT last month declined an invite by TSC to attend a stakeholder’s forum which was held on February 7, 2024 at the Kenya School of Government decrying the manner in which the Commission had sidelined them while they were coming up with the draft Bill.

In a letter addressed to TSC Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Nancy Macharia dated February 6, 2024; the union Secretary General Collins Oyuu stated the Commission didn’t engage them in drafting of the amendment Bill, and that they learnt of the intent to review the Act during the launch of the Commission’s Strategic Plan on June 6, 2023.

Oyuu further noted that the union required ample time of 2 months to prepare adequately on contentious already cited in the amendment Bill and engage its organs notably the National Executive Council (NEC), National Advisory Council, and Regional Councils as required by KNUT Constitution before giving its submission on the Bill.

TSC had issued an invitation notice for Public Participation and Submission of Memoranda on the Proposed TSC Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 a process that ended on February 15, 2024.
