Court clears TSC to proceed with TPD programme

By Mutuvi Janet

Justice David Nderitu of the Employment and Labour Relation Court in Nakuru has dismissed a petition challenging the implementation of the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme.

“The TPD programme which was introduced by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on September 22, 2021 will be going on without any interruptions since it is in line with the constitution of Kenya,” Nderitu said.

The court threw away the petition after the petitioner, Mr. Joseph Ngethe Karanja lacked sufficient evidence to support the claims that TSC never involved education stakeholders.

The full time training requires registered teachers to pay a training fee Ksh.6,000 for each of the six modules therein. The six-module course will be valid for 5 years before taking the next module.

The modules will enable to form teachers’ basis for promotion and employment going forward.

The TPD training programme will be offered by Mt Kenya University, Kenyatta University, Riara University and Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) as directed by TSC.

Through an affidavit signed by Dr. Reuben Nthambiri, the teachers’ employer said that the Education Cabinet Secretary, the universities, Kenya Union of Post Primary  Education Teachers (KUPPET), Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Attorney-General were involved in developing the modules.

He added that the programme would help improve the professionalism of teachers and better the quality of education.
