TSC Director urges new JSS teachers to heed calling, serve learners

TSC Director for West Pokot County has reiterated that teachers are ethically obligated to serve diverse learning needs of all children and must recognize, understand and demonstrate an appreciation for other perspectives like cultural backgrounds, values, believes, world views and different kinds of skills that learners exhibit at different levels.

Bernard Kimachas, the TSC Director was speaking at Nasokol Girls High School during the induction of the newly recruited Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers where there were over 200 trainees and seven trainers taking part.

“We are obliged to you as TSC for choosing this exceptionally valued profession which many people imagine is less important as compared to doctors, engineers, architects. The person that makes them all is the teacher. Feel most welcome to this profession which has invaluable blessings,” he said.

The director asked them to create and maintain an inclusive atmosphere for learners since some come from challenging environments, requesting them to stick to the TSC code of conduct and the Education act which should be the point of reference now and in the coming days.

Kimachas warned Teachers against immoral behavior, alcohol abuse and debts, observing that, there are many loaning platforms like mobile loans and banks which at times can be so unfriendly and intimidating. He reminded Teachers to start planning for their retirement since it was closer than they imagined.

On his side, the moderator of the seminar, Dr.Nakhisa Kusimba said that teachers are mentors of learners and as such, they should create an open conversation and allow the mentee make important and informed career goals and decisions. He stated that such decisions will go a long way in influencing learners positively and boosting confidence in learning areas.

Nelson Musani, the Curriculum Support Officer, asked the Teachers to set good standards by respecting other staff members, being neat, dressing in a presentable manner, preparing proper professional records and blending well with the community they find themselves in.
