The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), through the Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), has announced a structured nationwide training program for Heads of Departments (HODs) of STEM subjects.

According to a circular dated September 16, 2025, issued addressed to TSC County Director for Migori, Florence Momanyi, and seen by Education News, the directive was addressed to teachers across the country to prepare for the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at the Senior School level.

The programme targets a total of 297 HODs, drawn from mathematics, sciences, applied sciences, and technical studies, and forms part of the broader national preparations for the implementation of CBC. The rollout will occur in two phases.

The first phase will be a National INSET for 12 county trainers, scheduled for October 27–30, 2025, in Kakamega.

The second phase will be a County INSET for the 297 HODs, set for November 24–27, 2025, at Ulanda and Isibania.

The allocation of training slots across departments has been clearly stipulated.

Mathematics has been allocated 90 HODs, while science subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics will have 119 HODs.

Applied sciences, including computer studies, agriculture, and home science, have been allocated 60 HODs.

Technical studies, which cover electricity, building construction, metal works, power mechanics, wood technology, media technology, marine and fisheries, and aviation, will have 28 HODs.

In the circular, TSC emphasised that every school is expected to be represented and that each STEM department will have adequate slots to ensure fair participation.

The training is expected to strengthen the leadership capacity of STEM departments and enhance the effective rollout of the Senior School curriculum under CBC across the country.
