Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has instructed its regional and county directors to provide details of teachers and other TSC officials so that they can be integrated into the system for the implementation of School-Based Teacher Support System (SBTSS).
The programme targets those under the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Projects (SEQIP) programme and is specifically tailored to the teaching of the English language.
In a memo dated August 30, 2022 by the Commission’s Director of Quality Assurance and Standards Dr. Reuben Nthamburi, TSC stated that the information will help to facilitate the log in protocols into the learning management system developed by the University of Nairobi (UoN) in readiness for teacher training.
“The purpose of this memo is to request you to provide data on existing and trained facilitators/trainers of English, list of teachers of English from sampled schools, TSC SCDs (Sub-county Directors) and Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs) from SEQIP target sub-counties to enable the Commission facilitate the log in protocols,” said Dr. Nthamburi in the circular.
The Commission has further directed the TSC county directors to ensure that the targeted teachers of English are drawn from the same sampled schools for Mathematics and Science, preferably those not trained in SBTSS.
They are also to engage only the sub-county directors from zones with SEQIP, as well as CSOs within the same range.
The SBTSS programme is aimed at enhancing the teachers’ competence in pedagogy and mastery of content in the teaching of Science, Mathematics and English.
In the longer term, it will also build communities of practice for peer learning and support.
