TSC asked to appoint principal after Narok school students hold demonstrations

TSC principal

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Trans Mara branch has asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to urgently appoint a principal to Kabune Secondary school to quell anxiety among students.

The branch Executive Secretary Willy Korir said that these are challenging times when the Commission should promptly solve any issue that may lead to school destruction.

Mr. Korir was speaking at Kilgoris town on Monday after talking to students of the school who walked for 15 kilometres from their school in a peaceful demonstration to air their grievances at the sub county education offices.

“I thank the learners for peacefully airing genuine grievances and I agree they need urgent assistance,” he said.

The more than 100 students, who assembled at the office of the Sub County Director of Education (SCDE) Mr. Crispin Ogutu, complained of among others; lack of water, shortage of food, insecurity, insufficient and lazy teachers, and lack of a substantial principal and deputy at the school.

Bearing in mind the principal’s failure to attend school due to illness, they asked TSC to appoint a deputy to stand in for him.

The students were addressed by area Education Officer Kiplimo, on behalf of Mr. Ogutu, who thanked the learners for expressing themselves maturely by embracing dialogue.

“I am happy you came here peacefully and we have listened to you keenly. Now go back to school and wait for our response,” he said.

The officer gave them 3 bags of rice and 2 water tanks for use at school and called a bus from one of the area secondary schools to ferry the tired but anxious students back to school.

Efforts to reach the County Director of Education (CDE) for comments were futile as phone calls went unanswered.
