Treat private institutions fairly, Govt told

The Association of Private Technical Institutions in the North Rift region has asked Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) to craft measures to end the discrimination of students from privates institutes in the allocation of funds from Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
Led by Director of Nehema Institute of Science and Technology Joseph Chepkwony, the owners of private institutes claimed it was unfair for their students to face discrimination from the state despite assurances from Deputy President William Ruto that they would be funded.
“It is unfortunate that when students in government institutions get up to Sh50,000, those in private institutions only get less than Sh30,000,” said Chepkwony in Eldoret town recently.
They challenged TVETA to support their students who need more government funding than other government institutions.
“TVETA should not put our students in financial dilemma. We admit many needy and bright students. Let the Government support them too so we can get skills required in implementing the Big Four Agenda,” added Chepkwony.
He appealed to the Government to support all accredited institutions through sensitizing parents, adding that some institutes were grappling with bloated intake.
“The Ministry of Education should ensure that the distribution of students to national institutions is done according to available resources and capacity of the institutions in terms of class rooms and learning materials,” said Chepkwony.
