Kirinyaga West top candidate scores 398 marks

Grade 3 pupils perform in hand-made costumes. There are concerns that most public schools are ill-prepared for CBC.

St. Agnes Boarding School in Kirinyaga West Sub-county that normally occupies top position had the first candidate having 398 marks.

It was relegated by Multiple Academy with the top pupil attaining 417 marks.

Meanwhile, Good Shepherd produced 6 pupils with above 400 marks, the top pupil garnering 416.

Alber School Kutus’ top pupil Keyshiah Wanjiku Kamau attained 420 marks, as Kerugoya Municipality’s Gakii Tracy Karwitha got 410.

The transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) that was marked by the last KCPE yesterday was welcomed by most private schools in Central Kenya, even as some still grapple with the lost glory that came with rankings in national exams.

Kenya national Chair of private schools Solomon Munene said that the CBC will be able to give learners space to showcase their talents.

This was supported by a director of one of the best performing schools in the region, Good Shepherd School, whose opinion is that the government should re-introduce Art and Craft, Music and Home Science in the curriculum.

“When we had Art and Craft, Music and Home Science, many learners were able to put the craft courses into practice if they failed to secure a slot in secondary school. We believe if the government re-introduced the subjects, much would be achieved,” said the director John Mugo.

Mugo lamented that only public schools get support from the government. However, he was concerned that learners in those schools are not exposed to practical subjects like Sciences since they do not have laboratories.

He wondered how they are expected to perform even with the advent of the CBC as no one is ready to roll up their sleeves and ensure the facilities are available.
