Trans Nzoia County is finalizing preparations for the rollout of the Elimu Bursary Programme, an initiative aimed at supporting bright but financially disadvantaged students, the county’s Department of Education announced yesterday.

The programme, a key campaign pledge by Governor George Nayembeya, is designed to ensure that no student is denied access to education due to lack of school fees. The bursary targets learners who have been forced to drop out or miss classes because of financial constraints.

Speaking during a meeting of departmental heads in Kitale, County Executive Committee Member for Education and Vocational Training, Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama, said the disbursement is ready to begin following the resolution of earlier legal concerns raised by Members of the National Assembly.

“This bursary fulfills our governor’s promise to make education accessible to all. We’re asking school heads to keep students in class as we prepare to release the funds,” said Mutama.

She noted that the department had engaged stakeholders to streamline the bursary distribution process and ensure transparency.

The meeting was attended by senior education officials, including Chief Officer for Education Kennedy Seme Etiang, Education Director Administrator Pius Munialo, Vocational Training Director Eluid Lusweti, Education HR Officer Emmanuel Makhanu, ECDE Director Peter Omonya, and Department Accounts Officer Kiboi.

Officials expressed concern over rising dropout rates, attributing them to delayed school fee payments. Mutama further urged school principals to avoid sending students home, warning that doing so undermines academic performance and compounds inequality.

The Elimu Bursary Programme is expected to ease the burden on struggling families and improve attendance across both primary and secondary schools in the county. The initiative forms part of Governor Natembeya’s broader education agenda under the slogan “Education for All.”

Even though the county has not yet announced the exact date of disbursement, education officials confirmed the process is in its final  stage.
