Trans Nzoia equips 41 vocational trainers with modern teaching skills

41 tutors from 32 VTCs in Trans Nzoia trained on modern teaching skills to enhance practical learning and student employability.

More than 41 instructors and administrators from 32 vocational training centres (VTCs) across Trans Nzoia County have completed a training program focused on modern teaching technologies and the development of practical skills.

The training was spearheaded by Pratham International, a global education organisation based in India, in partnership with the Trans Nzoia County Department of Education.

The initiative aims to enhance the delivery of technical and vocational education in the county by equipping educators with the necessary tools and methodologies to keep pace with the evolving demands of the job market.

Speaking during the training sessions, Eliud Lusweti, the Director of VTCs in Trans Nzoia, highlighted the importance of preparing both educators and students for the future of technical work.

“This program is one way of sensitising our teachers on how best to deliver training to their students. With changing trends in technical education and the shifting nature of employment, it is crucial that our institutions keep up,” Lusweti said.

Rihot Shide, a coordinator from Pratham International, emphasised that the training was largely focused on hands-on learning and the development of practical skills, which are essential for today’s job market.

“Our goal is to move away from theory-heavy instruction and focus on practical training. This approach not only improves student understanding but also prepares them for self-employment or formal employment after completing their courses,” said Shide.

The program has already begun to make a noticeable impact. Peris Tisa, one of the participating teachers, commended the initiative for changing her approach to teaching.

“This training has completely shifted my mindset and teaching methods. We used to focus more on theory, but now I understand the importance of integrating practical experiences into every lesson,” Tisa said.

The County Education Office has pledged to continue working with partners like Pratham International to expand such initiatives, to ensure that all vocational institutions in the region are aligned with global best practices in skills training.
