Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Education and Vocational Training, Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama, has been honoured by FIDA Kenya with an Excellence Award for her exceptional efforts in promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality.

The recognition was presented during FIDA Kenya’s 40th anniversary celebrations, held in Nairobi under the theme “Purple Night.” The event celebrated individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to advancing the rights and welfare of women and girls across the country.

The CEC was feted for her transformative grassroots work through the Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama Foundation, particularly the Dignity Kit Program, which provides sanitary pads and undergarments to school-going children. The initiative was born out of her observation that many girls in rural areas missed classes and sometimes exams due to lack of access to menstrual hygiene products.

“Education is every child’s right,” Nasimiyu said during the event. “When girls stay out of school because of a natural biological process, we are denying them a fair chance to succeed. This program ensures that no child, boy or girl, is left behind because of poverty or shame.”

The program, which also supports boys from vulnerable backgrounds, has improved school attendance and restored dignity among learners in Trans Nzoia.

Beyond the Dignity Kit initiative, Nasimiyu was also recognised for founding the Women Teachers’ Wellness Initiative, a network of over 1,000 female teachers from across the county. The program promotes holistic wellness through health check-ups, mentorship, and peer support.

“You cannot teach effectively if you are not healthy,” she noted. “This program is about promoting wellness, confidence, and strength among the women who shape our children’s future.”

FIDA Kenya also lauded Nasimiyu’s leadership in technical and vocational training programs for vulnerable girls and young mothers. In partnership with organisations such as Child Rescue Kenya, her department has enabled young mothers to return to school and acquire skills in hairdressing, garment making, plumbing, and food and beverage production. Graduates receive start-up kits to begin their own businesses, fostering economic independence.

Her advocacy for women’s land rights during her tenure as CEC for Lands further cemented her reputation as a defender of justice. She played a pivotal role in helping widows and women reclaim land that had been unlawfully seized by relatives or community members.

“She is a shining example of what leadership can achieve when it is rooted in compassion and service,” said a FIDA Kenya representative during the ceremony.

Through her various initiatives, Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama has positively impacted thousands of lives in Trans Nzoia County  empowering women, restoring dignity to children, and creating opportunities for vulnerable families. Her work continues to inspire change within her community and beyond.
