Students across Trans Mara in Narok County have been urged to shun irresponsible behaviour and dedicate themselves to their studies to secure a brighter future.
County Public Service Executive Committee Member Josphine Ngeno said many young people misuse their freedom, a trend she described as harmful to their academic progress and unacceptable for the region’s development. “Young people today are given many opportunities, but some misuse their freedom. This behaviour must stop if we want to see positive change in our education sector,” she remarked.
Ngeno expressed concern over the rising cases of teenage marriages, noting that while some young mothers have returned to school, the practice should be discouraged altogether. “We appreciate the efforts of young mothers who have gone back to school, but teenage marriages should not be happening in the first place. Our girls deserve a chance to complete their education,” she said.
Speaking during a motivation programme at Simotwet Secondary School in Trans Mara East, Ngeno urged girls to remain focused on their studies, pointing out that the number of women in top leadership positions within the county remains low. “Education is the key to leadership. If we want more women in top positions in this country, then our girls must stay in school and work hard,” she added.

She also called on education stakeholders to support local institutions, stressing that every school has the potential to excel regardless of its location. “There is no such thing as a poor school. With the right support and commitment, any school can perform well,” she said.
Ngeno encouraged students not to limit themselves academically, explaining that success can be achieved from any starting point. “Someone can start with a certificate, move to a diploma, a degree, and even a master’s. Where you start does not determine where you will end,” she noted.
On bursaries, she expressed optimism that funds would be released this month, acknowledging that many learners across the county rely on bursary support to continue their education. “Bursaries are very important to our learners, and we are hopeful that the funds will be released this month to support needy students,” she said.
