Tononoka, Star of the Sea students back in class after Covid-19 outbreak

Learning at the Star of the Sea and Tononoka Secondary schools, which were closed following an outbreak of Covid-19, has resumed.

According to Mombasa County Director of Education Moses Makori, students and teachers returned to the two schools on November 2, after the lapse of the two-week quarantine period.

“I have visited both schools and I can confirm that learning is progressing well. Necessary measures have been taken to ensure everyone is safe. Face masks are compulsory while those with underlying conditions can be exempted from attending physical classes,” Makori said, adding that a fumigation at the institutions was carried out by the Ministry of Health before reopening.

A teacher at Tononoka Secondary School said normal operations had resumed at the school, albeit with stricter anti-Corona measures.

“We are going on with learning. The only difference is that everyone appears to be extra careful now than it was before,” the teacher told Education News in a telephone interview.

A parent with a child at the Star of the Sea also confirmed that learning had resumed at the school.

“My child is back in school and we are happy with the measures and the response so far,” said the parent.

The two schools were closed on October 21 after several students and teachers tested positive for the virus.

Barely a week later, Tononoka Secondary School principal Mohammed Khamis died, reportedly of Covid-19 complications.

Khamis, who was the first to exhibit symptoms, died at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital’s ICU where he had been admitted after his condition worsened.
