Tinderet Member of Parliament, MP Julius Melly has called for a unified efforts from all stakeholders to address the rising cases of school unrest across the country.

Melly warned that the trend poses a serious threat to the education and future of Kenyan children.

The National Assembly Education Committee emphasized the need for responsibility at all levels—from parents to school administrators—in tackling the issue.

“Unrest in schools is not just an education issue; it is a national concern. If left unchecked, it threatens the very future of our children,” said Melly while addressing residents in Tinderet.

He urged parents to play a more active role in guiding their children, warning that indiscipline observed in schools can easily spill over into homes and society at large.

“A child who can burn a school dormitory can just as easily destroy your home. Parents must step up and offer the right guidance,” he said.

The MP further revealed that the government is working on plans to increase the number of teachers in public schools in order to meet the recommended teacher-learner ratio of 1:25 as per United Nations standards. He noted that P1 teachers above the age of 40 would be given priority in the upcoming recruitment drive.

In addition, Melly commended the government’s ongoing reforms in the education sector, highlighting key achievements such as the provision of textbooks, elimination of national exam fees, and increased capitation for schools.

“These initiatives are helping to level the playing field and ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to quality education,” he noted.
