Time to look into TTC mass failures

The mass failure at the Teacher Training Colleges (TTC) points to a crisis in the training of the country’s tutors.
It is reported that more than 5,000 trainees out of 12,000 that sat the Primary Teacher Examination (PTE) in 2016 failed or were made to repeat.
The results shows that many students either failed or have been referred at TTCs.
The dismal performances at TTCs are worrying as the Government undertakes reforms in the education sector.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang says the situation is so dire that some TTCs have recorded as many as 400 referrals, with colleges offering school-based teacher training being the most affected.
The Ministry of Education has a duty to conduct a thorough investigation in the quality of students admitted to the TTCs, the teaching and tests they administer.
The probe should explore beyond exams and seek to come up with lasting solutions to many other problems that bedevil teachers training colleges including funding, infrastructure and staffing among others.
Even as the Government moves to rectify the mess, it should also fix the declining numbers of students enrolling in TTCs as the sector may lack teachers in future.
Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should urgently audit all teachers undergoing training for future planning.
Unless the situation is addressed, facilities in colleges will go to waste.
