Three pupils commit suicide in Kisii

Pain, grief and disbelief engulfed Mwamonda village in Kisii County after three pupils from Kiamabundu Primary School committed suicide. It is reported that seven others unsuccessfully attempted to end their lives.

The locals are currently asking the Ministry of Education and the Parents Association to work together and investigate the root course of the problem.

They have, however, blamed the actions on peer pressure amongst pupils and also expressed fear that the situation might worsen if nothing is done.

Speaking to the Education News, Kiamabundu headteacher Charles Nyagucha raised concerns on the interest of parents on matters affecting their children especially over the long holiday caused by the Covid-19 that has seen schools closed since March.

The headteacher noted that in most cases peer pressure amongst other issues resulting from home has greatly contributed to the urge by pupils to commit suicide over the long holiday.

“Some those who attempted cited frustration from home by parents forcing them to choose death as a way out to end the frustrations they are experiencing from home,” said Nyagucha.

“There is a big problem at home with the management of parenthood by parents. Poverty levels are high within the area,” he added.

On the other hand, parents have partially linked the incidences to the schools’ administration noting the need for religious leaders to offer special prayers to cast out demons.
