The Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya (OUK), Prof Elijah Omwenga, has expressed gratitude to President William Ruto and the University’s Administration for appointing him to the role.
Speaking at a higher education continuity sensitisation session in Kisii Town, he pledged to steer the institution toward academic excellence through collaborative efforts.
“While I am confident in my ability to lead scholars toward their academic goals, success demands teamwork,” Prof Omwenga stated.
He emphasised the University’s commitment to flexible online learning, urging adults to enrol and balance education with work and family commitments.
Addressing rapid technological advancements, he highlighted the necessity for professionals in both public and private sectors to embrace computer studies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to remain competitive.
“The world is evolving, and staying relevant requires adapting to digital tools,” he remarked.
For Form Four leavers hindered by financial constraints, Prof Omwenga encouraged them to explore OUK’s affordable programmes, which have enrollment fees as low as KSh 11,000 and flexible payment plans.

“We admit students with any KCSE grade, empowering them to learn at their own pace,” he assured.
Responding to concerns about cybersecurity, he affirmed that robust safeguards are in place.
“We’ve learned from global open universities thriving online—safety is a priority,” he said, addressing fears of cybercrime.
In concluding his advice to youth, he urged leveraging mobile technology for educational research over social media misuse. “Use your phones to unlock opportunities, not distractions,” he asked.
The session underscored OUK’s mission to democratize education through innovation, accessibility, and security in the digital age.
