The government has been urged to embark on scouting programmes to identify, nurture and propel the talent of gifted football players to the national and international limelight.

With an aim of developing grassroots football and improving the quality of the national players, Juja MP George Koimburi called on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to leave offices and camp at the grassroots where untapped football talent lies.

“We want to give exposure to the village talents that hardly get a chance to display their capability. It is now time that the relevant government stakeholders move out of offices to begin scouting for talent and help our village boys and girls fully exploit their skills,” said the MP.

Speaking during the hotly contested Juja NG-CDF football finals that were held at Premier Bag grounds, the MP expressed the need to discover the hidden treasure in village talents, which he said could be a solution to Kenya’s dwindling performance.

He said the competitions are healthy as they help sensitize the youngsters on the dangers of illicit brews and other drugs, urging leaders across the country to frequently organize such contests for the betterment of the youth.

Players who spoke to journalists regretted that poor sporting equipment and training facilities were still hurting their development and urged elected leaders to promptly address the challenge.
