The four stages of morale in every team

If you are a member of a particular team, then you need to have a good attitude. Support the people in the team. For you to do that, you need to have the correct concept of the four stages of morale that an organization goes through.

Stage 1: Poor morale — the leader must do everything

Nothing is more unpleasant than being on a team when nobody wants to be there. When that is the case, the team is usually negative, feels lethargic, or has no hope. This can put it in a precarious position. Therefore, as a team leader, investigate the situation. Initiate belief. Create energy. Communicate hope. As Napoleon Bonaparte put it, “Leaders are dealers in hope.”

Stage 2: Low morale — the leader must do productive things

The team leader must model behaviour that has a high return. Strengthen relationships. Before you ask people to lend you a hand, first you must touch their hearts. Communicate vision to give members direction and confidence.

Stage 3: Moderate morale — the leader must do difficult things

Getting the team together and moving, add up to an accomplishment. But where you are going matters. To change from simply moving the team in the right direction, you must do the difficult things that help the team to improve and develop high morale. Make changes that will make the team better. Re-construct the team. Minimise the damage any team member can do due to the defeatist attitude. Maximise the effectiveness of all team members by placing them in their proper places. Receive the buy-in of team members. It is one thing to cast vision to the team; it is another thing to get your teammates to buy in. People you lead, must buy into you as a leader, and embrace the values and mission of the team. Communicate commitment. Develop, and equip members for success.

Stage 4: High morale — the leader must do little things

Keep the team focused and on course. Communicate success. Remove morale mashers. Employ delegation. Allow other leaders to lead.
