Tharaka University Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Muriungi Kinyua was recently recognized as a national hero during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, in acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Under Prof. Kinyua’s visionary leadership, Tharaka University has become a model for environmental stewardship in Kenya, planting and nurtured over 40,000 trees within its campus, while donating more than 30,000 seedlings each year to local communities.
These initiatives have not only helped combat deforestation but have also empowered communities with the resources and knowledge to protect their environment.
In addition to large-scale tree planting, Prof. Kinyua spearheaded the establishment of a materials clean-up facility aimed at tackling plastic pollution.
