Tharaka University’s administration has spoken out following a fire which burnt its administration block on September 24, 2025.
In a press release signed by the university’s Vice-Chancellor on September 25, 2025, Professor Peter K. Muriungi, PhD, the institution acknowledged the incident that occurred on Wednesday night. It has been noted that there was damage to property, but it is gratifying that there were no casualties.
“While we sustained some property damage, we are grateful that no one was hurt,” reads the statement.
It reassures its stakeholders that normal operations within the university have been fully restored. Teaching and all other activities are continuing without interruption, as the institution remains strong and committed to progressing forward.
“Learning and other operations are going on uninterrupted. We remain resilient and committed to moving forward,” said the VC in the press statement.
In a statement, Prof. Muriungi stated that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and the institution will continue to update its stakeholders and the public on the findings.

“We wish to assure parents/guardians, students, staff, and the broader community that investigations into the cause of the fire are underway. The University will continue to update the stakeholders and the general public on the matter,” reads the press release.
The Vice-Chancellor thanked the students, staff, and surrounding community for their efforts in helping to contain the fire, and urged everyone to remain calm during this period. He reaffirmed Tharaka University’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students, staff, and all stakeholders.
The administration block had been home to several essential facilities, including the Vice-Chancellor’s office, the Information Technology (IT) department, and a computer laboratory. Other affected areas include the university’s online radio station and a conference hall.
