Following recent Al Shabaab attacks which resulted in 15 deaths and displacement of thousands of Lamu residents, at least 26 candidates failed for sit their just ended KCPE exams.
Lamu County Education Director Joshua Kaaga told Education News that the candidates did not show up for the exams in various centres as their families had migrated to far flung places shortly after the attacks.
‘’While some candidates went missing having registered for the previous year‘s exams, they again registered for 2021 only to fail to sit the exam,’’ said the director.
He said some students decided to join TVETs instead of resitting the exams while others fled with parents.
‘’Though it is sad we don’t know the students’ whereabouts , we are happy that this time round there were no special cases of pregnancy ,sickness or hospitalization,’’ said Kaaga.
He further expressed delighted that unlike in the past in recent past years, Lamu has recorded great strides in huge number of girls enrolling in school.
‘’Out of 3,661 KCPE candidates, 1,845 were boys and 1,816 were girls,’’ observed the county director, noting the margin was narrowing each year.
On the same note, he called on education stakeholders including religious leaders and parents to enrol more girls.
