Two of Bomet County’s biggest football powerhouses, Tenwek High School and Kaplong Boys High School are in a fierce race to sign 13-year-old sensation Victor Kiplangat after his standout performance during the second edition of Wakili Sigei Cup in Bomet County.

Kiplangat, a Grade Eight pupil at Aisaik Junior Secondary School, captained Green Snipers FC to a commanding 3-0 win over Kapkoros FC during Bomet Central sub county finals at Silibwet Stadium.

But his team, Green Snipers lost the Kaporuso FC in the county finals and took second position.

His composure and midfield dominance earned him the man-of-the-match title and instantly put him on the radar of the county’s top football programs.

Tenwek High School and Kaplong Boys High School have been archrivals for years and each wants to outdo the other by securing the signature of the gifted midfielder.

Kaplong Boys High School, the reigning Bomet County football champions for three consecutive years defeated Tenwek High School in this year’s county final at Bomet IAAF stadium to retain their crown.

Now both schools are fighting to recruit Kiplangat and its reported they have each promised him “goodies” if he agrees to join their institution, ranging from sports scholarships to full boarding support and training opportunities.

“This is the kind of player who can transform a school team,” said a coach familiar with the negotiations. “Whichever side gets him will have an edge in the county championship for the next few years.”

Kiplangat says the attention has boosted his confidence but also reminded him to stay grounded.

“Tournaments like this give us confidence. Before this, many people didn’t know me, but now I’ve played in front of scouts and a big crowd. It gives me hope that I can go far,” he said.

He credited the Wakili Sigei Cup with teaching him discipline, teamwork and humility.

“Our coaches reminded us to stay humble and keep our focus both in school and on the field,” he added.

The Wakili Sigei Cup sponsored by Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei has become a vital pipeline for grassroots talents.
