Migori County Women Rep Hon Pamela Odhiambo wants teachers to be ambassadors of the Covid-19 sensitization to both parents and learners.
The legislator urges teachers to make good use of the knowledge and skills they have to teach the public on the dangers of the Coronavirus.
Speaking in Mabera Sub-County during a meeting with a section of teachers and learners, Hon Odhiambo noted that most learners have been spotted loitering in the streets of Migori County despite authorities in the area issuing stern warnings.
Odhiambo called for the government to consider teachers as essential service providers and issue them with protective gear as they strive to engage learners in the newly proposed community-based learning.
“In as much as the government wants learners to be kept busy through learning, they must provide teachers with every essential they need to protect themselves from getting infected with the novel coronavirus,” said Odhiambo.
According to Hon Odhiambo, teachers qualify to be categorized among the essential services providers since they give peerless guidance to the learners during the pandemic period.
“Teachers play a key role in shaping the future of children in society. On many occasions, they have participated in distributing sanitary towels from the Ministry of Education to the adolescent girls in their respective schools,” she added.
The legislator called on parents from the county to ensure girls in Standard 6, 7, and 8 visit their respective schools on 19th August 2020 to receive two packets each of sanitary towels.
Other dates in which she also wants school girls to visit their respective schools are on 15th September, 14th October, and 12th November for more packets of sanitary towels.
However, Hon Odhiambo urged parents to shun from forcing their children into early marriages saying it has negatively affected the development of the nation.
