Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kisumu branch officials have petitioned the National Assembly, Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to consider Nyando as a hardship area.
Ephraim Kananga, the branch Executive Secretary, said this would enable teachers from the region benefit from hardship allowances and other privileges enjoyed by their colleagues working in difficult environments.
“This process involves legislation and as representatives of teachers we know what pinches our people, we wish Nyando is declared a hardship area the soonest,” he said.
Mr Kananga said most schools in the area were facing a shortage of teachers as those who were posted there often left due to flooding.
The area is located in Kano plains, which is affected by flooding year after year.
“During rainy seasons roads in the area are rendered impassable and in dry season water scarcity and hunger are a big problem. Teachers have to put up with the difficult situations and most are not comfortable working there,” said Mr Kananga.
He said last month a stakeholders meeting assessed the area and report given to the relevant bodies for action.
