Makueni County Teachers Service Commissioner (TSC) Director Alex Cheruiyot has encouraged teachers to open up when they are faced with problems beyond their control to avoid suicidal cases.

He was speaking after a 45 year old teacher at Mathangathini Primary School committed suicide

at Kaseve village, Katithi sub location of Mavindini division in Makueni County.

“It’s very unfortunate to lose teachers in such a way. I would like to encourage all teachers to open up to their close ones when faced with problems,” he said.

According to police report, the deceased came home in the evening while drunk and then sent his son to go pick his motorbike from Kaseve market where he had left it.

His widow said the deceased asked her to leave the house before sending their son to go and get back his motorbike.

“I went back to the house after a while to check if he had settled only to find him hanging on the roof of the sitting room using a rope,” she explained.

He didn’t leave behind a suicide note.

The body of the deceased was taken to Makueni county referral hospital mortuary.

Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) CEO Benta Opande had earlier on indicated that around 22 teachers had committed suicide in the past two years and most cases are attributed to mental health and failure to open up.
