Teachers have been asked to embrace and maintain innovation, integrity and devotion in their profession as they undertake their daily duties.
In a speech read on his behalf by Nyanza Regional Director of Education (RDE) Nelson Sifuna during Kenyenya Teachers Training College’s (TTC) 6th graduation ceremony, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu told teachers that they have been chosen to enlighten the world and they should do so with honesty, devotion and faithfulness terming their profession as a noble call.
The CS asked the teachers to be innovative and critical thinkers so as to stay abreast with the demands of the ever-changing sector.
He asked them to be conversant with the Education Act, the Teachers’ Code of Conduct and the Children’s Act among others.
Machogu asked teachers to instil in their learners a culture of critical thinking, self-reliance and solution-oriented thinking for the betterment of the society.
“Education is known to be the only equalizer of all in the society but also try to discover individual talents in your learners and lead them towards realizing their potential,” he added.
The CS said that his Ministry had spent about Ksh 3 million towards development of the College and asked the administration to use the funds prudently as they will be held accountable.
Kenyenya TTC Board of Management Chairman Dr. Moses Otieno appealed to the community to work hand in hand with the institution in order to realize its goal of bringing holistic development in the region.
The College Chief Principal Dr. Titus Shavisa said the college presented 960 graduands for 2023.
Among these, 743 graduated with Diplomas and Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Development (ECDE) while the remaining graduated with Diplomas in Primary Teachers Education.
He said that the College was facing a number of challenges including lack of a modern administration block, dining hall and library which could be a resource centre for students and the community but expressed optimism that the college will develop further.
The Principal decried the low enrolment of students who stand at 90 students and attributed it to the strict entry grades to join TTCs.
The ceremony was attended by Bomachoge Borabu MP Obadiah Barongo, Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere, Kisii County Education Board Chairman Prof. Henry Onderi and Borabu Teachers’ Training College Principal Mr. James Atuti among other local leaders.
