The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has said that teachers and TSC secretariat seeking elective positions in this year’s August 9 General Elections need to have resigned by now in compliance with the Elections Act.
In a circular dated February 4, 2022 signed by the Commission Chief Executive Officer and Secretary to the Commission Dr. Nancy Macharia, the teachers and TSC secretariat staff wishing to join politics need to have rendered their resignation and cleared by their respective Supervisors by February 8, 2022.
The TSC boss had instructed them to ensure they hand over all institutional property which was in their possession and get clearance from their respective Supervisors on or before the deadline, and the Supervisors required to facilitate their exit from service.
“In compliance with the provision of Section 43(5) and (6) of the Election Act, all employees of the Commission who are desirous of contesting any political seat in the forthcoming General Election scheduled to take place on August 9, 2022 are required to exit the employment of the Commission on or before February 8, 2022.
“Such employees are directed to handover all institutional property in their possession and clear with their respective Supervisors who shall facilitate their exit in accordance with the Code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT) and Human Resource and Procedures Manual for the Secretariat staff,” said Dr. Macharia.
In its election calendar of activities, the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) and also in line with a Court of Appeal ruling on the same matter; all public officers who intends to contest in the General Election are required to resign from public office within six (6) months before the date of Election being on or before yesterday’s 9th February, 2022.
