Teachers told to elect leaders of integrity

As the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) gears towards elections, teachers in Migori County have been urged to elect disciplined representatives.

The election in the region is slated for January 16th 2021 at Migori Teachers Training College.

Addressing teachers while on a campaign trail, Assistant Executive Secretary aspirant Mr. Kevin Mijungu said the branch has since been mismanaged hence calls for change in the union leadership.

He noted the need of enhancing unity through the creation of teachers’ days within the county to discuss matters affecting them and also participating in co-curriculum activities.

“The union needs leaders who inspire confidence in the members they serve. Leaders must be able to serve teachers without discrimination to enhance unity amongst teachers in all forums,” said Mijungu.

He, however, called for the need to fairly utilize the burial benevolent fund (BBF) other than buying land with money meant to support families of teachers who have passed on. He also challenged leaders to increase the allocation for the burial of members.

On the issue of teacher stagnation, Mijungu accused the current leadership of failing to advocate teachers’ interests promising to address the issue once elected.

“Any unionist in office who has failed to effectively defend and negotiate better pay for members does not deserve to stay in office and should pave way for other leaders to take charge,” said Mijungu.

“The classroom teachers must be recognized and awarded on the impact of education since they toil daily to ensure they work under a favorable working environment to give good mean scores in the national exams,” he noted.

He, however, called on teachers to turn in good numbers at Migori TTC for the union elections to elect leaders basing on their abilities.
