Teachers have strongly opposed what they describe as the re‑introduction of delocalization transfers “through the back door,” warning that the policy undermines their rights and welfare.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) National Treasurer James Muuo Ndiku said the union is against promoting teachers only to transfer them to regions they did not choose. He stressed that promotional vacancies must be advertised transparently, allowing applicants to decide whether they are willing to serve in those areas.

“We do not want our members to be promoted and transferred to other regions without their consent,” Ndiku said, adding that promotions should be fast‑tracked for those who have served three years or more in one grade.

On school funding, Ndiku challenged the government to release capitation funds on time to ensure smooth operations in learning institutions. “Let the government send capitation money to schools in time because they need to teach, feed, and accommodate students,” he said.

Ndiku made the remarks in Machakos town after overseeing KNUT’s Machakos Branch elections, where the entire leadership team was re‑elected unopposed. He praised the branch for demonstrating unity and conducting a successful democratic process.

The polls saw Executive Secretary Luka Judah Wewa retain his seat for another five‑year term. Other officials re‑elected include Chairman Michael Katisya, Vice Chairman Ben Musyoki, Assistant Executive Secretary Gladys Ntheka, Treasurer Daniel Mwanzia, Assistant Treasurer Patrick Muthee, Women Representative Jane Muthoni, Persons With Disabilities Representative Anne Ndunge, and BEC Member George Kilonzo.
