Teachers marking KCSE exams at Moi Girls in Nairobi on Monday, May 3, downed their tools and took to the streets to lament over unpaid allowances.
One of the examiners for fear of reprisal anonymously expressed dismay in the manner which KNEC has been handling issues.
“This afternoon, the examiners have downed their tools because of the poor working condition and the way KNEC is addressing our upkeep and welfare issues,’’ one was heard to protest.
The examiners who lamented at deduction of some of their allowances without consultation accused KNEC of disregarding risks teachers had taken to come and mark the KCSE scripts during Covid-19 pandemic period.
“The risk we have taken to come and ensure the national exercise a success is being taken for granted and nobody is listening to us ,’’ another examiner said .
They examiners who missed their lunch while protesting complained that they were not allowed to buy lunch outside the centre for security reasons.
The markers further complained that marking English paper is so tasking and needs painstaking efforts that the government ought to be fair to teachers and consider the risks they have taken at Moi Girls and other marking centres.
