Teachers interviewed for promotion in December to know their fate this week

Dr Nancy Macharia, TSC CEO. Teachers who interviewed for promotion in December will know their fate this week.

The over 36,000 teachers who applied and interviewed for promotions last year will know their fate this coming week of February 26, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia has said.

The teachers were interviewed for promotions in primary, secondary and teacher training colleges, some having stagnated in the same job group for years.

Having undergone the interviews in December last year, there have been jitters that their promotions were unduly delayed and TSC itself did not proactively inform them of the challenges they were facing.

However, there was an explanation about a week ago that the commission was dealing with over 30,000 teachers in the shortlist, and therefore will take longer than expected to collate all of them.

Macharia envisages that 20,000 more teachers will be hired in the next financial year. The commission will also advertise an additional 6,000 positions this financial year after it was allocated one billion shillings for promotion of teachers.

Further, the 46,000 teachers currently on contract will be converted to permanent and pensionable terms upon completion of two years. 20,000 more teachers will be recruited on contract this year.

Macharia was speaking to the media in Nairobi, where she also touched on the amendments of the law as contained in the TSC Amendment Bill (2024). She said the commission is still engaging all stakeholders in the sector before taking the Bill to Parliament.

Kenya National of Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have lauded the move, saying it was long overdue.

“It’s been long overdue. Promotions should be done more progressively. Teachers have stagnated for too long and that’s not acceptable. Some have been acting in their roles and we expect them to be substantively appointed to enjoy their benefits,” Secretary General of KUPPET Akello Misori said.

His KNUT counterpart Collins Oyuu said TSC ought to pay the promoted teachers arrears from the time they qualified for promotion.
